July 12th, 2010
Charlotte, NC

Phoenix played an amazing set at the NC Music Factory’s Amphitheater. Never before I have I truly felt the artist appreciated and gave the proper respect to the fans who make them who they are as Phoenix did at this show. From the most sincere “..thank you Charlotte, this is our first visit to your city and we are so glad to be here…” to the “1901″ encore in which they invited the entire seated area to join them on stage to close the show.

The encore finale was honestly the most amazingly wonderful thing I have ever seen. It warmed my heart which may sound pretty lame but it did so shame on you if you missed it. Furthermore, as a musician I give them much kudos for being able to maintain enough composure with 1,000+ people on a stage designed for 25 at most to continue playing their grammy winning hit “1901.” This show was in support of their album released in early 2009, titled Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, which was released on May 25, 2009[3].

The album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix was recorded in Paris by Cassius’s Philippe Zdar who co-produced and mixed the album.[4] The track “1901“, a tribute to early Paris, was released on February 23, 2009, as a free download prior to the release of the first single, and aired for the first time on Australian radio station Triple J.

On December 2, 2009, nominations for the 2009 Grammy Awards were released, with Phoenix receiving a nomination for the album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix for Best Alternative Music Album. On January 31, 2010 Phoenix won the Grammy Award in this category. Shortly afterwards, “1901″ peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot Alternative Songs chart[7]. Phoenix performed at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, California on Sunday, April 18, 2010 and is scheduled to perform at the 2010 Bonnaroo Music Festival in June 2010 and at the 2010 Lollapalooza Music Festival in August.

This group of guys is a total class act from top to bottom. Many Charlotte music community members know these guys for different initiatives through the years and if you know them then you know how class act they are as citizens and musicians within the community.

This dub act is inspired by the great Lee “Scratch” Perry. This is certain to be an event filled with gorilla suits, rasta, and enjoyable times had for all. If you are in town then by all means check this event out and purchase the new 7″ vinyl they are releasing in union with this festival of super apes.

Spoon releases Transference on January 18th as the follow up to Ga Ga Ga. Without question this personally is my most anticipated release of the year. This band that holds a special place in my heart ever since Delicate Place from the album Gimme Fiction was playing at my favorite watering hole of 2003, Dilworth Bar & Grill and the barkeep turned me onto them. Since then they are/have been one of my top 5 artist of all time.

If you buy one album in 2010, buy this album.

Likely, you already know them whether you know it or not. Spoon is the soundtrack to so many movies, tv shows, and commercials that I have lost count. Most notable, they were essentially the entire soundtrack for the movie Stranger than Fiction with Will Farrell but have also been featured in the Simpsons, Scrubs, Chuck and even a small indie film I enjoy The Puffy Chair to name a few that I personally have noticed.

They are on Merge Records, which calls North Carolina home and beyond its roots and amazing talent on the roster they are good people doing good things for music across the nation and world. Check out Merge Radio to hear more of the amazing lineup of artist on Merge Records.

Spoon- the underdog

January 12th they release the second dose with Contra on XL Recordings.

This album holds a lot of potential but also a lot of expectation within indie circles. Still with little traditional FM airplay, they have build a serious following. This album will surprise the chart watchers and just may finally break the hurdle of entering the mainstream of American music. With a little luck, Charlotte will get the opportunity to see Vampire Weekend in the support of the new album.

The album will be available almost everywhere records are sold but I recommend supporting Charlotte’s Manifest Records on South Boulevard. They are avid supporters of Charlotte music and music in general.
